How Did I End Up Here?
I sat in the lawyer's office, reflecting on my life. I was raised on the East Side of Detroit - in the "hood". I recently went to my old neighborhood. The home where I grew up doesn't even exist anymore. It's been torn down. As a matter of fact, my old high school needs to be torn down. The old neighborhood looks like a bombed war zone.
My whole life I dreamed of living a better life and did whatever I could to make it happen. I went to college and got a master's degree. I worked what some would consider impressive jobs. I even received many awards and national recognition for impacting the lives of others.And yet, here I am sitting in a lawyer's office.

To go hungry
To go to my sister's home to get empty pop bottles so that I can buy groceries.
To sit in the welfare office to get food stamps
To avoid creditors because I had no way to pay my bills
To worry about my gas & electricity being cut off
To be so depressed that getting out of bed was difficult
To hide my situation so that most people never knew how bad things got
sometimes - not even family.
To celebrate how often God carried me through these tough times And yet, here I was sitting in a lawyer's office.

Can you imagine how embarrassing and hurtful it was to be a senior not prepared financially to live comfortably? Imagine the shame and the fear I faced at having to file bankruptcy in my mid-sixties? I was facing losing my home and having to start all over again – in my 60’s! I have always been considered a hard worker. Many people called me a work-a-holic.
In spite of difficult times, I held on to the dreams and goals for me, my family, and others. My strong sense of purpose and destiny is the only thing that kept me going.
